The Hundred years of Indian Cinema

Everybody is celebrating the Indian Cinema for completing its 100 yrs, the transition of movie's and the subsequent change which has taken place over the years is worth jubilation. This league began on 1913 when Dada Saheb Phalke released the first Indian film "Raja Harishchandra".After quitting his printing press job he watched a silent film called "The Life of Christ" which made his mind to make a movie of his own. It wasn't an easy task and he had to undergo several difficulties and pain to collect funds. Besides Shooting the film he also had to lookout for techniques to create special effects. He went in several experiment with the camera to visually capture Gods and Goddess having supernatural powers. Finally he made the film and went to London for its showcase , he received overwhelming response and was asked to work in the British Industry which was already blooming. He refused and said that he will work in India so that people will get jobs and my country will grow.Such were the words of the man who invariably made the country with most cinema ticket sells and largest producer of films. Thereafter there were series of producer who wanted to try in the "cinema movement" notably "Wadia brothers" and others. The 1930s was the year of unconventional  movies such as "Indrasahbha" , "Himmat- e- Marda"," Miss1933" etc , no specific movement was followed and films related bizarre stories were released. Ironically some of the films were as lewd as contemporary item songs and consequently went controversial. A four minute long kiss in the movie 1934 movie Karma stirred indecent and obnoxious response among people and was withdrawn immediately from theaters . This led to revision of the cinematographer act of 1920 again to curtail obscenity from Indian mainstream film. Regional film industries also had evolved by this time, artist such as poets, writers, dancer all wanted to try this medium to take their artistic merit into new dimension of reality. Bengal,Tamil, Telugu , Oriya films started their own linguistic cinema and considerably found praise by the audience. the 1940's was the period where films started gaining international attention with Chetan Anand's "Neecha Nagar" being awarded the grand prize at Cannes festival in 1946. Bollywood a colloquial name was suddenly in use to represent primarily hindi films, regional producers also started naming their  industries with "wood" suffix and seemingly Kollywod , Tollywood, Pollywood etc were established. By the end of 40s and as India got independence films had become a major source of income and was supporting the Indian economy to flourish. . The 1950s started with themes of pro poor with movies like "Baija Bawra", "Do Bheega Zammen", "Naya Daur" and was trying to entice audience to the screens. By mid 50s Dilip Kumar, Raj kapoor , Dev Anand etc were all cashing in their movies rapidly ( "Hum hain rahi pyaar ke" , "Awara",  ) and had developed their own fan base.
This gave rise to increase the number of screens and hike ticket fare. Lavish decorations, exotic locations, high budget costume dance numbers and hum dinging songs were choreographed to  attract more and more audience.1957 was a golden year for Indian cinema when the cinematographer act was again revised and colour film started. That year Indian movies shinned and bagged awards at every prestigious award ceremony , Golden Lion or "Aprajito" by Satyajit Ray , Golden Globe for "Do Annken Barah Haanth" by V .Shantaram and "Mother India" directed by Mehboob Khan lost with only a sngle vote to Fellini's "Le Notti de Cabriia" at the Academy award . Dev Anand was considered to be the handsome most star and there is a myth that he wasn't allowed to wear suits, similar case happened to Rajesh Khanna who was so famous among girls that he received letters in lipstick stain.  Indian people have always loved the escapism and heroism, stories where the hero played  larger than life roles have always proven massive box office ("Sholay" and Mughal -E-Azam). In the 1960 s Love stories("Sangam") and family entertainer ("Chaudni ka Chand") were superhit formulas to find success in the box office. While 60 s was devoted to family drama and romance(" Kashmeer ki kalli", "Aardhana", "Haryali aur Rassta", "Kaal aaj aur kall") 70 s went notorious with villains exhibiting negative sides outrageously; notably Ajit, Pran, Amrish puri etc.Crime caper movies like "Don", "Ram Balram" , Sachcha Jhootha, Mr Natawarlal in fluxed excessive violence and refreshed audience with the hackneyed romanticism and family fiasco. These movies felt as in voice against the discrimination and social injustice. Parallel cinema was also no behind commercial to influence the audience  thriving with social commentary on rural lifestyle and meaningful scripts ,art films flourished  with Manthan, Garam Hava, "Dhuvidha",etc.Comedy had also shaped itself by this time with" Bombay to Goa", "Golmaal" ," Bhoot Bangla", not to forget mentioning famous comedians like ISJohar, Kestoo Mukherjee, Johnny Walker etc who always formed the part of cast. Rajshree productions , R K films , BR Chopra films , Prasad Production were some of the most lucrative studios of that time and they continued to produce movies and enjoyed box office success . 1980s was a turbulent year with underworld mafia becoming operative and movie studios declining due to the emergency state of 1977 that was imposed in India.Government stepped in and started providing assistance and funding to movies with NFDC. This really helped the industry to regenerate and we had multi budget star studded films like "Burning Train" and sci fi as "Mr India". 1990s was the year of slow and steady , producer were not willing to invest much due to economic instability which had occurred again after the political turmoil of assassination of Rajiv Gandhi and Babri demolition,  mafia's scare was all around and funding films illegally. Movies were not able to enjoy silver jubilees and subsequently getting withdrawn in less than three weeks. Still we had gems like "D D L J" and "Virasat". 2000 came in with a good note when Lagann found Oscar nomination and global attention , further new range of directors like Anurag Kashyap and Raajkumar Hirani made movies which were hits both in India and abroad. Dev Anand or Dilip Kumar, Rajesh Khanna or Amitabh Bachann  , Kamal Hassan or Rajnikant, Shah Rukh Khan or Aamir Khan there Indian cinema always saw competition among stars which maintained the audience curiosity for their star and this way Indian Cinema never saw the dawn of film industries and continued to glorify forever.
